? I plan on coming in this Friday, 10/9 or the following Friday to perform solo acoustic songs. Are cover songs allowed or is it original songs only. I have some poetry, which I have not recited before in public, which I can also bring along. Is there a song or time limit per performer?

I did open mic at the Nola Café last night and had a great time. What a great group of people with a variety of ideas and outlooks. And what a great sense of humor! I plan to attend again.

First of all, Thank You, Papos, for running the best Open Mic I have been to. You arrive early to setup, which takes at least 45 minutes, and you stay late to tear down. You are a wonderful singer/songwriter/guitarist, and have a warm, friendly, accepting personality. You sit at the PA/mixer, and ensure that everyone's vocals and instruments are well-balanced, and at a good volume. The mix of singer/sonwriters, instrumentalists, percussionists, poets, comedians, and just singers (like me) is very interesting and enjoyable. The talent levels range from raw beginners to professional level, and all stages in between. I respect and support each and every performer, no matter what their genre or level of talent. As Papos says in his weekly email reminders, it's all about self expression. My only self expression is singing. I appreciate the understanding of the musicians when I sing to tracks on my iPod. The tracks were recorded for me by professional musician friends who I do perform with live, but they are unable to come to NOLA Café (one dear friend is no longer with us, and the others live and work in the Washington DC area). Using their tracks allows me to express myself with my singing and have the joy of singing with talented friends who can't be there in person. I love the diversity, open-mindedness, and tolerance to all at the NOLA Café. Thank You, owner Louis Robert, for sharing your wonderful home city of New Orleans with us, and allowing us to have a great Open Mic.

I played for the first time at open mic here last night. Everyone at Nola was so warm and welcoming - it was a great time! I loved getting to know some of the artists and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Hope to be able to make it out again soon. Thanks to everyone there for making me feel at home.
