rob ilyAIMY (5/2008)- Well, overall it was a good experience, having not played about in a public space for over two years. The host, Rob, was accomodating (and quite an amazing guitar player himself) and the audience was pretty receptive. My two songs were You Ain't Going Nowhere, the old Bob Dylan chestnut from the late 60's and a reworking of the Police Song called Walking in Your Footsteps, done with a double dropped D tuning in Richie Havens style. A few observations: most of the acoustic guitar players had graduated to guitars that can be plugged into a sound system (even the host gently polked fun at me for not being able to plug in and having to be miked old fashioned style) and most of the acoustic guitar playing was more rock oriented, at times in a Ani DiFranco percussive sort of way. Looking back at the evening, I feel that I had something to offer a little different, coming from a more folkie-oriented background, and I plan to continue to play at open mikes, enjoying what younger players are doing and sharing a little bit of my own style(being the old man of 50 :-)
Gary Bass (12/2007)- for the time that ilyAIMY is on tour, the Java Mammas open mic will be taken over by Ashraf Dawod - due to popularity we've downsized most nights to two songs (but then sometimes go around again).
rob ilyAIMY (8/2007)- Great open mic - Besides being a seriously gifted musician, Rob's a really nice guy. Managed to squeeze a lot of exceptional talent into a pretty small room. One note - the music starts at 7:00, not 6:00, though you should get there a bit early to sign up. Also - really good chocolate shakes. I'm just saying…
Wendy Fambro (8/2007)- (yay! I manage things fairly!!!) On that front, because of the popularity of the first night, I'm switching things to 2 songs / 10 minutes to assure people get a chance to play. If we run out of performers before we run out of time, we'll just go round the list again.
